Climbing onto the sleeper train, verity and I nervously found our allocated beds in a small curtained cubicle with 2 sets of triple bunks in very close proximity. We were sharing this confined space with 3 Indian men and 2 small Indian boys who giggled excitedly at the prospect of being so close to two white people. They immediately began trying to make conversation with verity who was on the bottom bunk and I was sure she would be in for a long night! However to my envy she was soon out like a light and I was the one left awake contemplating what type of rock my pillow was made of! Eventually after drifting off I was then awoken to our "roomies" carrying out their morning prayers and chants which their Islam faith insists they do before the sun rises. And yet still verity sleeps!

When we finally arrived in Varanasi we had a much needed shower and then headed down through the chaotic streets to the river Ganges to observe the hundreds of cremation rituals happening on the banks. Then in true Indian tradition we took a boat out and floated candles down the river for good luck. Although its the worlds most polluted river due to the amount of dead bodies sunk in it, the water there is considered so holy that the people take great relish in drinking it and bathing it and due to the balance of good and bad bacteria they miraculously avoid disease. Nevertheless unsurprisingly we chose not to partake in this ritual! Can't believe we've only been gone a week as we've seen and experienced so much already!
