Where I stayed

In comparison to the big cities and the impressive architecture we have seen so far, the small rural town of Orchha has been a complete contrast. Leaving the Taj Mahal in the distance we left Agra yesterday morning in the dark and the fog. It's always freezing cold in the mornings before the sun has risen and its always humbling to see the homeless people huddling around fires on the edge of the road warming their hands as we look down on them from the comfort of our coach.

As we got closer to Orchha buildings gradually became huts and we were met by the river Betwa, one of India's cleanest rivers. Today wondering around the town, after spending the night in deluxe tents, we watched the locals washing their clothes and bodies in the river. They seem even friendlier here and always want to give you gifts or help you out in some way. Tonight as we ate our market food crouching on the edge of the street two men kindly brought us chairs from their restaurant to sit on and children have been constantly giving us flowers, thread bracelets and henna tattoos for free. Verity and I have decided to embrace our inner-traveller style and bought some hippyish skirts and trousers from the market along with various other bits and bobs, improving our haggling skills in the process. There our six beautiful temples in the area all with stunning views over the countryside and river and naturally with every temple comes a story or legend which the local guides tell with great enthusiasm. We are now preparing for a 13 hour journey on a night train and feeling slightly apprehensive about it. Ear plugs at the ready!!
