Have a lie in today and Tony goes out to sort a hire car as its cheaper than the tours to the glacier plus means we can leave later. Weather still great and we head off after stocking up for a picnic. Drive is just over an hour away along the lake and then towards the amazing mountainscape. First approach the glacier which is gigantic and are awestruck by it. Have to negotiate a number of coaches to park up and then start to walk along the series of boardwalks to different viewing platforms. Is quite busy with coach parties.

Views are amazing clear blue sky with the icy white and blues of the glacier which is about 5km wide and a lake runs beneath it. Is more impressive than what we saw in NZ we think. As the sun is out we hope to see some of the glacier break up and we are not disappointed with sporadic crashes and thuds as huge bits break off and cascade into the lake.

We stop at the nearest viewing point and start our gastronomic picnic with champagne and lovely cakes courtesy of birthday money! It should be a relaxing picnic but we keep getting up as we hear a crash of ice to see it fall. I take far too many videos of it all, usually too late after the action! By now the boardwalks are virtually empty as the coaches are leaving so its nice to have it to ourselves. We admire it for a good few hours before completing the walk around and then head back home. I need another sleep by now and the boys head out to sort out buses and look at the shops.

Are sort of really celebrating my birthday today so go out for a posh meal at a restaurant nearby although its also one of the cheapest. All have a steak with a different sauce or accompaniment is delicious. Get a free Pisco Sour too which is nice and a nice bottle of Argentinian red. Very enjoyable all round and finish with some more cakes from the nearby patisserie. Diet still going well obviously.

Today get up early and feeling a bit groggy for our bus back to Puerto Natales. Bus is full as we go a different route back via Rio Turbio a border mining town. There are long queues at both border points which is frustrating esp as there seems to be only 1 stamp at the Argentinian one so they have to keep wandering back and forth to use it.

Get back to a more dreary and windy Puerto Natales for about 2ish and head for another pizza as feel I have had a set back today health wise. Vow to drink less alcohol from now on. Have a good rest too and then go and do internet to read more birthday messages.

We then pack our small backpacks ready for the trek tomorrow, although I am still not 100% sure whether I will do it or not.
