Woke up early again despite sleeping well, must be all this going to bed so early lark.

Embarked on our walking tour of the old town. From the start in felt like we were in a completely different city to last time we were here (we only stayed in the new town last time). First up to the Basilica which is huge inside was fantastic stained glass and never ending little chapels. Also saw the crypt and then the piece de la resistance we paid $2 to go up the towers. Had a great view of the church and stained glass from the 2nd floor and then up again got a great view of outside. But no it did not end here we then could climb across the church´s roof (am sure it has a technical name but not sure what it is - sorry dad) and then up some very steep stairs to go up and outside. Fantastic views of the towers and the whole exterior from up here and then you could keep going up to get scarier views. Back inside we decided to look at the cafe and found you could also climb up to the belfry, yet more scary steps past the clock faces and bells and up again. Was very cool but pretty dodgy too. Think we were both relieved to be back on terra firma.

Walked down into the old town through narrow streets and past shops selling everything from ribbons to trophies. Next stop was the Plaza Grande which is a beautiful square with the presidential palace, cathedral and lovely gardens. Loads of people out and about. We carried on our wander and came to Iglesia San Francisco in another huge square. A service was going on and the floors were creaky so we had to tiptoe around the back to see the lovely gold interior which also looks like its being renovated. Next door the monastery and museum were open which were also very good with a lovely courtyard. Could go up and sit in a balcony watching the service in the church and proceeded to get lost in all the corridors and courtyards that I am not sure we were sposed to be in. Lovely paintings and antiques but very gothic. The museum was also ok but we prefered wandering the rest of it. Next went to look at the shop/museum underneat the church which was good but pricey.

Lots more wandering later we think we may have exhausted the old town and certainly our feet. Are now doing final internet things and photo copies and getting ready for our visitor tomorrow in Santiago.

Obviously are really looking forward to seeing Dave´s dad although he may regret coming when he sees how much stuff we want him to take home! Am also a bit sad as now we have finished our loop of northern South America it feels a bit like we are coming to the end of S America proper as Chile and Argentina felt more European to us, although we only saw a small part of it so far. Certainly are not looking forward to the more expensive prices in Chile though!

Anyway signing off for a while now no idea when will be on next as don´t want to bore Dave´s dad with our internetting.

Adios for now!
