Up earlyish for our trip booked through Miguel for 3 days to the canyon. Today we get a tourist bus to Chivay a town towards the canyon. Have a number of stops on the way to get pics of the volcanoes, mountains, wetlands, llamas, vicarunas and elpacas. We see Pichu Pichu a currently active volcano with loads of smoke gushing out which makes me want to go to it. Another viewpoint we pile stones on top of each other for good luck. You see this in lots of places in deserts etc as a kind of monument to pachamama.
We get to Chivay for lunch and have some nice trout before we go to our hotel and complain that we dont have a private bathroom or double bed as promised (and its our wedding anniversary) we are duly upgraded and are happy
Chivay is a small town and is named the Love City as it was here that an old king came here for his first night of his honeymoon. Cant see why else its called that though to be honest! Went around the market before we then wetn to the Calera hot springs. These were great and we spent ages in the pools which were also very hot.
In the night we decided to avoid the group visit to the restaurant with folkloric show (have had enough of pan pipes) and went to the nearby observatory instead to see some stars in the clear night sky. The Incans actually look at the sky completely differently to us and visualise shapes in the darkness of the sky not the stars e.g. snakes. Was quite interesting but the actual stargazing in the telescope was pretty short although we saw a cluster of stars like butterflies and other coolish stuff. Back to the main square we decided on a desolate restaurant purely because it did steak with roquefort sauce, one of our faves. We were a bit dubious but were not disappointed!
