Eventually arrived at around 11:30pm after 14.5 hours on the bus from Belem (approx 1.5 hours later than expected). Got a taxi into the centre and drove around until we found a cheap hotel with room!

Crashed out and had a nice lie-in before brekkie and out to explore this new city!

Its a lovely place, very colonial, partly restored, but much of it in disrepair. Lots of colours, especially tiles used on external walls due to the humid climate, but there is a nice breeze coming off the sea.

Spent some time relaxing by the pool in our Pousada (Sol Nascente - got it knocked down to 40 Reals a night - about 10 pounds or $20) and just off out for another wander, looking forward to tonights festival.. more on this in the next update.

Did go for a wander around the Revolver area which is the old colonial section which has been renovated and was a bit more touristy but still very nice. Had a drink by the sea watching the sunset and tide come in and then wandered to the festival area. This was in the old slave market and had a huge stage and hundreds of chairs which we dutifully sat on and waited. It started late with a school orchestra who were actually very good. Followed very late (according to the programme) by some local musicians and dancers. They were wearing very large headresses and feathers and it was all very African influenced which this part of Brazil has a lot of links to. We think we established that the festival was the last night of a festival for Sao Luis birthday but dont take our word for it.

After a while and before a fight broke out amongst some locals over who was standing in front of whom we went outside to have something to eat from the stalls. Despite our awful Portuguese everyone is so kind and helpful running around to get us chairs and make sure we are ok etc.

We went to bed before the real party kicked off which I know is unlike us but we are still shattered!
