Last night arrived in Caracas, huge sprawling city with lots of slums and not a square inch of space. Feel a bit nervous here but are staying in a safe area. Only have one day here before we head north east again to enjoy more of the coast (feel like we are on holiday almost!)
Today have sorted out a few bits and bobs and wandered around the ever present Plaza Bolivar and some colonial buildings. Also went round the house that Simon Bolivar was born in which was beautiful and wonderfully kept plus it was free. Are getting stared at quite a lot here as there are not a lot of tourists around. Have also spent a while trying to get somewhere to upload photos which we thought we had found but is taking ages. But have met several very helpful people on the way which has made us feel quite at home here. Went for lunch off one of the plazas in a very nice looking restaurant which was actually not full of tourists but locals and pretty reasonable too. Had a maizy pancake called a cachapas filled with ham and cheese (and a lot more flavoursome than normal arepa - very bland tasting maize cake).
Tonight we have our meeting for this stage of the trip and goodbye/welcome meeting although we all know each other already. There are only 8 of us on the next stage just Ant and S the new ones and ozzies, Swede and other Brit staying with us. Fingers crossed will enjoy rest of day in Caracas as much as have done so far!
Next stage of trip is a lot more camping and wildernessy as we have been spoilt with quite posh accom (for us) and flights on this section. Fingers crossed will be ok. Have a few days in Playa Colorado before head south towards the Amazon - exciting stuff!
Ciao for now.
