Arrived at about 17.30 lst night and were approached by a guy pretending to be official to offer us a taxi and accommodation. Were not sure about this so rang up hostel originally planning to stay at and managed to converse just about in my pigeon Spanish. Got the cheap taxi and went to see the hostel which was in a dodgy area so went to another which was fine and cheaper, near the Plaza Italia, Hostal Chile. Santiago is 5 hours behind UK so bodyclocks still v confused but knew we were hungry.

Wandered down our road and saw a nice looking authentic restaurant which looked v expensive but advertised a 6 course meal for about 6 quid. Were celebrating tonight as officially today is the one year anniversary of me being unemployed! V nice old wooden furniture inside and a few locals so started with our apertivo of pisco sours (tastes like tequila but a lot nicer) and ordered one of everything of what was on the 6 quid menu not really knowing what it was. Started with pastries filled with cheese and some lovely bread, then had avocado salad with some sort of fish mayonnaise and chicken soup followed by stewed gammon with chips and a local soup with lots of beef, veg and potatoes, followed a fantastic crema caramel and 2 coffees. Not bad for 6 quid each! Suitably stuffed went back to play pool and chat to fellow guests at hostel before bed.

Today had a lie in and thought we had a few hours to explore a bit of Santiago before we return later in the year. However literally walked around the block, found a cashpoint and then went back to get the metro and bus to the airport for our flight to Ecuador.
