On road down stopped again to see the biggest Kauri tree in New Zealand - Tane Mahuta - which has a girth of 13.3m and height of 51m. They reckon its at least 2000 years old too. Then did another walk through a fair amount of mud to a waterfall which was a bit disappointing as you couldn't actually see it as you couldn't get out on the rocks to view it without falling in which unfortunately Dave wouldn't do!

Further south were getting worried that we were about to run out of petrol (refused to pay 1.90 per litre in the rural bits but were starting to regret this!). Managed to avert another van related disaster and found one for a lot cheaper after a while that was actually open on a Sunday!

Drove down towards Dargaville (main town on the west coast) and out west to Baylys Beach which is the largest driveable beach in NZ apparently. We tentatively parked on the sand by the start of the beach and had our lunch as 4wd drove out onto the beach. Walked out onto the massive beach with v hard sand after lunch where there were loads of cars and vans parked watching the very impressive kite surfer and other mad cold water lovers in the sea. Felt like wimps again not driving on the sand!

Into Dargaville which was not the most impressive town we have seen and headed out and further south back onto the highway 1 (basically the way we had come up). Had to find a phone to do loads of phone calls tonight (and make the most of cheap calls here). Found a great place to camp just outside Warkworth (no castle here like there is at home though!) at Snells Beach. Literally parked next to the beach and toilets nearby (its as if they organised it like this for us!) Rang home and Spain and my gran which was lovely to talk to everyone and get the latest.
