Happiness? A good meal, a good cigar, and a good woman; or a bad woman. It depends on how much happiness you can handle. George Burns

Randle, Washington
Cool, hazy bright

The Bear arrives today. I'm off to see the Bear. She arrived more or less on schedule. It was great having her with me again.

We dealt with all the airport stuff, recovered her luggage, got her settled into the van and left Sea Tac airport. We headed south-east through
apple Valley and Black Diamond to Packwood. We wanted to visit Mt. Ranier (14,400') from the east side at the Suneise Visitor Center. It turned out the road was closed, snowed in. We proceeded on to Randle and headed south to Mt. Saint Helen's. We went back up to Windy Ridge on Mt. St. Helen's. Even though I had been there a few days earlier I welcomed an opportunity to see it again and I thought Helen should see it.

Generally She does not verbalize her responses to places we visit. Here she made an exception. She very clearly responded emotionally to the evidence of the destructive powers of the eruption. Toward day's end were traced our path back to Randle, a small crossroads town at the foot of the mountain, where we secured a room for the night. The long day ended pleasantly. Having Helen's company after about 6 weeks of aloneness was a real treat and, of course, a hot shower, shave, and comfortable bed put the icing on the cake. We often forget how good the small comforts of civilized living can be and the quality they add to life.
