While we live, let us live

6-5-92
Casper, Wyoming
Warm, huge cumulus clouds

East of Jackson on US-26 I drove through Togwotee Pass, 9658'. Conditions were very much like a few days ago in the Beartooth mountains. There was a dark cloud sitting atop the mountain peaks. I climbed into a light rain which changed to sleet and snow. It started freezing on the windshield. I began to think I had made a mistake by coming this way. But once over the pass everything returned to normal.

I continued, passing through tiny towns like Dubois, Crowheart,Shoshoni, Moneta (population 10), Powder River and Natrona. At Casper I checked into the Best Western Motel. It was time for a good meal, a long hot shower and a spacious bed. Once again I was overwhelmed with the deep pleasure afforded by a few comforts.

Western Wyoming, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole are spectacular. Here in eastern Wyoming there is rolling grassland, buffalo and cattle country. It is also beautiful in a different less spectacular way.

My thoughts have turned toward home. It feels good to be headed more or less in that direction. At least now I'm no longer getting farther away.
