I am sitting in the living room of my new apartment in Mumbai, India... It's really hard to write these entries, as I know you who are reading this will want to be dazzled. So far, I have not been dazzled by India, but it is early yet, and I still haven't even seen the place in daylight, having only arrived a few hours ago in the middle of the night.
I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to go through customs, what after the headache that was procurring an Indian visa from the embassy, and the third degree that I got in customs in London (I mean, really, why are they questioning little ol' me all about the particulars of where I am staying and how I know these people? Am I really a threat?) The airport is clean, but looks like it has been transported from the seventies. I was greated by heavy, sticky air, and a throng of drivers all shouting and pushing. Finally, with relief, I found me driver, but was accompanied to the car by four other men, who all wanted $20 each for the pains of walking with me. Thus, I am introduced to India. I gave them $3.00 and walked away, while the protested that it wasn't very much. (Inside the car, I thought about it and it made me angry, as $3.00 is quite a lot here, and they didn't do anything to deserve it in the first place.) Hopefully that experience will teach me, and I shall not fall prey to their plots.
The apartment is quite nice with several bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. There are four other models staying here, and I've met most of them. Two are from Iran, and one is from Hungary. The last model was a surprise, as it is my dear friend, Edda. I thought she had left for Iceland already, but she is still here until Monday night. This is wonderful, as my drive from the airport left me feeling a bit desolate (It is ugly here, there are shanty towns everywhere, and stray dogs. That is my first impression of India). Finding her here is an answer to my prayers, as I shall have her just long enough to show me a thing or to about the is town. Already I am told that tomorrow we shall go to a club. Yes, Edda is wonderful and I find her presence to be refreshing. I always worry about how everything will work out, but God proves faithful, and He always sends an angel in the form of some person or another to help me.
