Hello All,

So today VFV held their annual Medical Mission that had been postponed from Saturday because of our quarantine.  The Medical Mission is basically a day of mass, free circumcisions.  Here in the Philippines it is not culturally acceptable to be uncircumcised. So those boys who's families can't afford it are often made fun of.  The Medical Mission helps those boys be accepted.  Our goal was to circumsize about 300 boys but I am not sure what the final count was.  There were like 4 doctors and 4 nurses who oversaw everything.  But most of the circumsitions were done by the volunteers here who are in medical placements. All of them got to do a few circumsitions before hand so they knew what was going on.

I, of course, did not do ANY circumsitions.  I would never beable to do that. haha  I just cleaned and sterlized all the instruments because we obviously didn't have 300 sets of the tools we needed.  It was so chaotic the whole day.  We had about  tables set up with 2 boys on each.  There was screaming almost constantly.  It was a really interesting experience though and I am glad I got to see it.  I am completely exhausted now however.  We left at 7 am and just got back at 7 pm.  So I will be showering eating and going to bed in like an hour.

In case you were wondering, my second day at the orphanage was just as good as the first.  The house mothers seemed to be much less interested in the children though.  It relaly frustrates me because most the time they just sit and talk or text instead of helping the cring babies.  At one point I was trying to take care of three crying children at one time and they all just watched me try.  I just hope that maybe if they see me trying to care for multiple children sooner or later they will get up and help.

Jonathan is still struggling to get his needs met.  I couldn't get them to let me take him out of his bed at all on Tuesday.  And I couldn't get him to eat more than a mouth full of formula. I hope and pray that I can give him all the love and attention I can while I am there.  Since his other needs are so hard for me to tend to.

Atta girl!
You're doing great! I'm not sure what I'd do around the circumcisions but I know I'd be frustrated around the (lazy sounding) house mothers. You have a true calling for this... whereas it's just a job to them. Don't let things get you down- you can change the WORLD for those children. Even on your WORST day, you can do something unforgettable for them! Love you!

Coolest cousin ever!
Elsa, you rock, I'm proud of you. I've always wanted to do something like that, although I want to build electrical grids and other engineering dork activities. I don't have any toys, but I absolutely want to send you money to buy that or whatever else you think these kids need. Please tell me how and where to send it!

Re: Atta girl!
I try to keep telling myself that. I have been trying to make each kid smile at least once and pick them up at least once as well. I can see you getting really annoyed with the house mothers it is realllllyyy obnoxious. The kids are amazing though :)
