Heyyy All,
This Saturday I went with the group of Canadians and the few other volunteers on our first excursion.  First we went to the mansion of one of the past president's wives.  She bought the land and had the house built to showcase all of her things but never actually lived in the house.  The house was so beautiful, it was a big contrast from the city around it.  They also had the chair that Pope John Paul II sat in when he visited the Philippines in 1985.  After that we went to the longest bridge in Asia; it was insanely long.  Next we stopped at one of the dump site locations.  The dump sites are basically landfills.  Unfortunately there are people that build tent like structures and live in the dump site because they can't afford to live anywhere else.  Even more depressing is that there are over 50 children that live there also.  They scrounge around the dump site for food and returnables so that they can live.  VFV has placements there to try to save the children's lives.  I didn't get to go in all the way because I had sandels on and it was too dangerous.  But it was unbelieveable.
Our next stop of the day was lunch at a farm/ resort.  It was so crazy going from the dump site to a gorgeous resort.  I almost felt guilty and had trouble enjoying it.  After that we took what seemed like the longest jeepney ride ever to one of the many beaches in the area.  The ride seemed long because it was so hot and we were crammed in the jeepney with 16 other people.  The beach was amazing, and the water was so warm!  There was a wedding going on at the same resort so we even had some music.
It was a very long day, from 8 am to 7 pm.  But it was a really good excursion and it was nice to get to know some of the volunteers a little better.
