Well, we made it to Ouro Preto (black gold in Portguese), a gorgeous cobbled town protected as a world heritage site. Our pousada (B&B) is right at the top of the hill (thanks for the recommendation Anya) with an amazing view over the town. The people who run the B&B are lovely and it is so relaxed that we have already spent 3 days here - mainly recovering from the trauma of the 7 hour overnight bus journey with v little sleep, no fresh air, lots of stopping, bumpy roads and a Brazilian pensioner yapping all night! Suffice to say the hammocks have come in extremely useful already!

Neil has discovered the joys of 'comida a kilo'. Ostensibly a very cheap way to eat - a buffet where you pay by the weight of the food. Neil has taken it upon himself to try and actually eat a kilo of food at every sitting (863g the record so far) which actually becomes v expensive!!! I take all the light lettuce and cucumber and he piles on as many chicken wings as will fit (I then eat off his plate too of course!).

Yesterday we spent some time with Ingrid from Amsterdam (Eve - she did the same course as you in Leiden no less!) visiting one of the gold mines that only closed 25 years ago. You went down about 350m in a rickety little train thing (think Raiders of the lost arc) and got to see the subterranean lake and the guide fella showed us how to pan for gold. We headed over to the next village, Mariana, for more plate piling action and then had to do some more sleeping. Yep - we are still officially rubbish at drinking after our lack of regular practice in St Andrews. Two nights ago we decided 3 caiparinhas (local crazy cocktail) before dinner and more afterwards was a good idea at our United Nations gathering of Germans, Israelis, Dutch, Brazilian, Italians in a local bar. Neil and I were last seen limbo dancing our way up the hill to the B&B. We swear there was a chain fence near the petrol station that made us do it but it didn't seem to be there the next day!!! We have now sworn off drinking...again...until the next time.

Tonight we again brave the night bus back to Rio only to jump on another one back in this direction (crazy bus network) to a seaside town called Paraty that's meant to be gorgeous. Currently we are trying to lose two stalkers who shall currently remain nameless as they have already tracked us down to the net cafe!!!! Watch this space for more specific updates as they are on the same bus as us tonight and believe that our main role in life is to entertain them!!!
