Buenas noches, y bienvenidos a the first blog entry!

So where to start.... well I arrived at Cancun airport at 2am local time, after a 24hour (delayed) door to door journey time. I met up with some fine German folk (sorry Bird) at the airport, and we headed into downtown Cancun to stay at the hostel I had reserved. It was fine, apart from the fact that its bar blared out the worst music I have ever heard (Drum and bass type stuff) till 6 in the morning. So after a great nights sleep of 3 minutes or so, I woke up at 7am bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to head out to do some much-needed sunbathing. I headed to the local park and had a couple of tacos for breakfast (as you do), and started to read a book about the founder of LA Gang the Crips (good read by the way). At this point, the heavens opened, and a tropical storm broke out, leaving me stranded and perched on a table, trying to find shelter under an umbrella. I was a bit pissed off what with this being the middle of the dry season in Mexico and all, but anywho. After the rain subsided, I noticed out of the corner of my eye a dashing local bum mincing towards me. I tried (unsuccessfully) to avoid his gaze), and as I looked up he asked if he could look at my book. Obliging, he proceeded to read it both upside down and back to front, nodding and murmuring thoughtfully. When I told him about the normal way in which humans read books, he said "I know", and then went on to let me know that this one was about being saved, and that I had "many options". I thanked him for these kindly words, and as is customary he removed his shirt and went on his way.

I hope that this is the first of many such cultural interactions with the locals.

To cut a long story short, the rest of the day ws spent eating, reading, sleeping, talking to locals, and eating. I had wanted to go to the beaches where "The Real Cancun" was set, but on my way I was escorted out of a posh hotel as I didnt have the right bracelet, and then yet again soaked to the skin by a tropical rainstorm. I had also planned to go to Coco Bongo in the hope of meeting Laura from The Real Cancun, but it was $40 to get in (!) and the rain was pissing me off. So I went to bed.

Today I got a bus to Playa Del Carmen, as Cancun was a bit of a dump. Playa is awesome (if very touristy) - beautiful white sandy beaches with warm turqoise waters. I have spent the whole day so far lying on a beach, sleeping and watching attractive (and unfortunately some no so attractive to say the least) women wander around topless. Im about to go shower and then head out for some beers, at which point I will go and chat up the two attractive ladies I saw earlier / sit by myself and wait until a plump local takes pity on me and comes to talk to me (delete as appropriate).

Hope everyone is well,

Hasta luego
