Today I did a really nice hike. The weather was great in the morning, so I headed to Sel first, which is a 1920s turf-roofed farmhouse with a great view of the glacier Skeiðararjökull. From there I headed to Svartifoss (Black Falls), something I´ve been really excited about seeing since I started planning this trip. It´s this amazing waterfall surrounded by black basalt columns...probably the most beautiful waterfall in the world. (look it up on Google images)
Soon it started to rain and get cold again (it seems to rain for about 1min every 5 min or so here...very weird), but i wanted to go to Sjonarínpa, which is a lookout over the glacier Skaftafellsjökull, so i did. That was really cool too, but heading back was a little difficult...the trails in this country are not very well mared and are pretty difficult to follow. Needless to say I made it back eventually.
Tomorrow I´m headed to Landmannalaugar to hang out for a day before embarking on my 4-day hike to Þorsmörk. I was talking to an Australian guy who had done the hike and he said it is very difficult, much more so than the Lonely Planet book makes it out to be (they make it seem like everyone and their grandmother can do it). For example, the 3rd day is 16km, but they don´t tell you 10km of that is through sand!
Oh well, i´m still super excited. I wo´n´t be on here until the 20th at the earliest. Wish me luck!
