So remember when I wrote about "Thai time" well we were told today to show up at 2 pm at the Barracuda Bar on the beach to check-in for our 4pm ferry back to Langkawi. Why do you need two hours for check-in? Its only a 5 minute wait at the fold out card table immigration counter, and I think there was only 15 of us...but we are told to show up, so we show up.
" The Boat today to Langkawi will leave at 7 pm..." Why is it running behind? No, just today we leave at 7 pm. Okay then, so there could be worst things then being delayed for 3 hours in paradise, like being delayed at O'Hare airport in Chicago where I live for three hours in a snow storm...so off goes our flip- flops and time to go for a walk down the beach to have that one last iced Thai coffee, and a last meal on a mat in the sand.
We lost track of time a little and the immigration guy ( he also is the ticket guy for the ferry) came down the beach looking for us at 630 pm while we were walking back from dinner to let us know that everyone else was on the boat and they had been waiting for us....I thought the boat was leaving at 7pm??? Never mind......
The ferry boat back was really nice, bigger than our one we rode out on.. The sun was just setting and Maureen and I went to the top deck and rode up there the whole way back. Once we were out in the middle of the ocean, the whole sky was filled with stars, and the breeze was so warm , it was an amazing way to leave our island paradise, we knew that it had to be over some time, and we had to go back to reality. There are some people who travel here and stay for months, either on the same island, or island hopping and staying a while on each island. There was a family at one of  the hotels from France that was traveling for a year, they had 3 young children and they were home schooling them as they saw the world. In fact there was quite a few travelers with young children, babies! On a island , in the middle of nowhere, with no medical care if needed, and these were backpackers! How in the world do they cart around all the stuff that you need for a baby is beyond me, but there were quite a few there.
We had one more night in Langkawi, before our Journey back to Singapore since our flight back to Kuala Lumpur left in the morning, so we needed a place to crash for the night and we couldn't get into our lovely Sunset Beach Resort so we had to find another accommodation, and alot of the hotels were full, so I went on to Trip Advisor, the website that I love and use so much to find my off the beaten path little hotels and guest houses that I stay at on my travels,. the reviews are done by travelers like me, so they are real, and honest, and usually ALWAYS just as they say they are...but I was about to strike out tonight.
The little guest house was called pondok keladi, it was said to be " a find" from fellow travelers, a small place up a road by a mountain, kinda funky and different, and a great price, and we were coming in late, leaving early..so sounds great!!! Getting ahold of the place was a little tough, no email, and only a cell phone, which the owner wasn't answering...one of the nice girls from our Sunset Beach Resort tried several times to call for us when they couldn't get us in for the night. She finally got ahold of the owner, so our room was going to be held for us on our stop over in Langkawi on Sunday night. We were getting in much later than expected so someone called for us from Koh Lipe to let him know.
On our ferry out we met a couple that didn't have a room for the night, and a nice girl from Holland traveling by herself so I shared my " great find" with them, an brought them along to see if our guest house might have an extra room for them. Our taxi driver was hesitant while driving up the road in the dark to the place, stopping even once to say, " You sure you want to stay out here? Its not even on the beach, and its in the middle of nowhere" we told him it was fine, it was late, and we were leaving first thing in the morning. It looked pretty cute when we pulled up. The owner greeted us and said he had rooms for all. He wasn't from Malaysia,, he looked like a sort of a lost hippie, and he had ALOT of dogs and a bunch of chickens. He seemed a little different, but he was really nice and welcoming, and it was almost midnight.
We were shown to our room, looked like a sort of Spanish style villa room....from the outside that is. When he opened the door and turned the light on, cockroaches just scattered , and when looking up you could see lots of cobwebs...it looked like the room hadn't been opened or used , in a realllly long time. We didn't want to be rude,it was really late, the cab had already left and we were in the middle of ...nowhere. I felt bad for my newly found friends that I had dragged along to my "great find" in the middle of nowhere...but this was one of those situations when you just have to deal with it.
So the owner drew us this funny little map of where to walk out from his property in the morning to catch a cab in the morning to the airport, said goodnight and to pay him now since he doesn't get up until noon, and we were off to our room with a can of bug spray. We got most of the roaches , and tried not to look up at the cobwebs, and slept on our sarongs as bed sheets, the sheets  also looked like they had been there for a while, and we also left the lights on, ( cockroaches hate the light, and come out in the dark) and used our eye-masks to get a couple of hours of sleep, and also sleep with our purses beside us. Fabulous.
But you always cant strike it every time., and without situations that just are just not so  great sometimes, it makes you really appreciate the ones that really are wonderful.

Pondok Keladi
Hi there, sorry to dissappoint you but those people who ran Pondok Keladi while you were there were not the real owner. They leased the property from the landlord, Di for one year as he was travelling abroad. Obviously you were not the only one who complained about the terrible state of the accomodation under the management of the couple. Not only they charged a higher rate but also the place was a complete tip! They did not look after Pondok as one should hence gave it a very bad reputation. I visited the property a few days ago for business reason after reading your review. Di, the real owner greeted me. He took over the property 2 weeks ago and has given Pondok a a very clean look it deserved. The gardens is immaculate. The rooms are neat and tidy. The rest area where the communal kitchen is located was full with guests. I will surely recommend this place to my clients...

pondok keladi.....improvements
I wud agree with the original entry but as i stayed there since march the whole resort has had a complete makeover....The previous tenants had not looked after the resort at all and since they left the owner has worked non stop to bring back the original charm of the place....i now wud gladly recommend any of my friends to stay there, clean ,tranquil, and the gardens are such a delight. The rooms are spotlessly clean and have been repainted. If any one had been there prior to march 2008 they wud be amazed at how much has been done.Every day i stayed you cud see the improvement in quality from the mess it had been left in...I will rtn later in the year and am already looking 4wd to see how the place will develop...Dee is a terrific host and i wish him the credit he deserves...Jason
