Even though the place where we are staying here in the Maldives  would be considered a more " casual" resort, there are still the guests that come to an island dressed like they are going to high society luncheon instead of a shoes optional beach getaway. You can spot them right away. The luggage is usually the first giveaway, over sized, designer, and then its their footwear, and then its their handbags. Its hard for travelers to let go of the comforts of home and really embrace the reason that they are traveling so far away from home and looking to be swept away from reality and far away from their busy schedules and captured in the art of true relaxation.
Its hard to do, I have mastered the art of being on vacation, I know how to turn the light bulb off the moment I step off the plane, and be part of something different, its the reason I go away in the first place. It truly is a art, being in the moment, and letting go.
But for others, its not as easy, and you can spot them in a heartbeat.
Christine and I signed up for a sunset fishing trip, an adventure out on the high sea, hand line reel fishing, with bait, and a fish BBQ after back on shore. It sounded like a great opportunity to experience a great local excursion, and catch our dinner.
We waited out on the dock for our departure, and I spotted a group of Asian tourists waiting close by. The women were dressed in low heels, dresses, and carrying Prada Purses. Where are they going I thought...Is there another tour today? Christine and I were prepared to get a little dirty reeling in our fish with our t-shirts and khaki cargo pants.  Our vessel pulled up to the dock, a large motorized long tail with enough room for about 30 eager fishermen. We approached the boat, the group overdressed for such an excursion approached as well. " Are they going on our excursion  as well? Do they know this a fishing trip? This is going to be interesting...
The water was a little bit rough tonight, not too much for the casual boater as myself, but not for the sea weary.
The fancy group sat in the back of the boat, oohing and awing every time the boat swayed back in forth holding on for dear life ( it wasn't that dramatic) but they sure acted like it was. Christine and I sat up front with the other seasoned fisherman types, from Germany and Switzerland. Then it started, the noise of people loosing it. You could hear them loud and clear, all of those fancy dressed women were leaning over and throwing up over the sides of the boat. Now I know what its like to be on a bad boat ride ( Sara can contest to this) but this was not a bad boat ride.
But this was just plain ridiculous. They were unprepared, overdressed, and were not going to ruin our fishing trip. All the rest of us rolled our eyes, baited up our lines, and threw our hooks into the water and tried desperately to ignore all the dramatic sounds that were coming from the back of the boat. After about a half and hour into it, the nice boat crew decided to help the unhappy guests and called for the speedboat to come and rescue them . Good riddance. More fish for us. Prada and high heels have no business on a fishing trip.
We didn't have much luck on catching any fish, but we both got some pretty big bites, but nothing we were successful in reeling in. But we savored every moment being out on that beautiful ocean, since this was our last night on our private island getaway.

Projectile vomiting into those beautiful waters YUK!!!!! So has Elizabeth found beaches more beautiful than Koh Lipe??? If pictures tell a thousand words I think the answer is yes. Sunset shots are insanely beautiful. May the first-class travel goddesses shine upon you on the return trip. October is beautiful in San Diego right now.
