There a reason why some places keep their simplicity and steer away from attracting all the crowds, they aren't easy to get to. This is the case on our next destination, Koh Phayam which is a small island southeast of Bangkok, and close to the border of Burma, and also a 10 hour overnight bus ride from Bangkok. There really isn't any easy way to get there, and this seems to be the most efficient, since the overnight bus allows you to arrive in the early morning hours, in time to catch the 9:30 am ferry to the island. It also saves you money on a hotel room since you re sleeping on the bus. We went for the 24 VIP bus, which is sort of like, our old business class on our international flights which larger size chairs which recline and have footrests...fancy! Remember I said, kind of, its really not that high end, but if you take on of the more crowded buses that seat 32, you will not have any leg room and end up sleeping down with the locals on top of luggage in the cargo area like my friend Michael who is way too tall to stretch out in any bus seat.
In any case, Christine was impressed, being her first long overnight bus ride. We were seated in the very back of the bus which luckily didn't effect my sometimes motion sickness, we propped our feet up and we were out for most of the ride.
The Morning Ferry is surprisingly not crowded for the most popular season here  in Thailand. Even though those who know about this island still flock here for a authentic island get away, most go to the hyped up touristy destinations of Phuket, and Koh Samui.
We arrive and get in the taxi que to jump on the back on the motor bike taxi bikes , the only form on transportation on this island, noticing very quickly the advantage on having a backpack instead of suitcase since the taxi driver has to put your luggage in between his legs while you hop on the back.
Christine and I are off to our bungalow, Mr.Gao about a 15 minute ride thru the flower filled meadows with only a few road side establishments dotted along the way.
Every time I have stayed here at Mr. Gao, I have stayed in different bungalows, in fact there are no two that are the same. This time we are right on the beach, next to the beach side bungalow that Sara and Erika stayed in our last visit. Its really cute, complete with an outdoor bathroom and shower, cold shower, but its all part of the experience!
Mr.Gao has gone a little more upscale since my last visit, they have free wifi now! And the electricity works from sunset, to sunrise..
We ended our first day with a sunset beer at the Hippie Bar a short walk down from our bungalow on the beach, over a few rocks, and a must needed flash flight for the return walk to navigate over the hidden rocks with the tide washing back into shore after dark.
The Hippie Bar is by far the most creative handmade structure built by scrap wood and whatever else washed up on shore that could be used to create a make shift wood structure designed as a large pirate ship. Michael says it reminds him of a big tree house for adults. It has rickety ladders taking you up to hidden perches and platforms which probably shouldn't be attempted with too many Chang Beers, even though I'm sure many a few have risked such a climb.
Our plan is to stay on this island for a few days with no plans at all, expect what Delicious Thai food we are going to order for our next meal, and what time do you want to head down to the beach. Now that is my kind of vacation.

Yummy!!! I want some coconut ice cream. Living vicariously through all the fab fotos. Is it as beautiful as Koh Lipe? Was the bus as nice as our ride to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore? Enjoy some dee-lish pad thai for me!!
