I hung up my backpack for the last week and have been letting my Turkish friend show me around his hometown. Fortunate for me his hometown is this beautiful small town on the water where the Mediteranean and the Agean Seas meet. In a word - the place is stunning.
It is about one month before the tourist season begins and so the town still has a very local feel to it. We rented a scooter for a few days and have toured around visiting old ruins, local markets, empty beaches, and rural villages. We toured old villages where he used to live (his parents were teachers and traveled a lot) and met some of the most hospitable people I have ever met in my lifetime. And the food. The FOOD!! Oy vay. Amazingly fresh!! I never knew olive oil could make something so tasty!
I think I will have to dust off my backpack again soon and hit the road - but it has been so extremely nice not having to consult a map or guide book and of course, to see an old friend again!!
