Hi my loved ones! I am finally posting my trip to Finland. I flew over a couple weekends ago courtesy of cheapo- ryanair. I took a few days off and had a long weekend to enjoy. An old friend of mine is currently there for a few months, so I thought there was no better time to visit. A free place to stay and company to enjoy makes a new city oh-so much more enjoyable. Mark has a whole group of transplanted Irish buddies there, they are all doing a master's program together, plus they live in the international apartments, so there were lots of fun people to meet. Among the new aquaintances: Rob, an American living in Germany since last August, visiting Helsinki for the same weekend as me, from MI, lived in Kzoo for a while...eeeeerrrieee....:) Nickolaus, a German ballet dance, who on the first time I met him started quizzing me in German. He and a friend were on their way into the woods to 'make a fire'."Oohh, fun, I thought, who all is going to this bonfire?" "us two" "...hm, I think I'll stay here..." This is the guy who went to sleep in the woods one night, just because he thought it'd be fun. Seems like a cool guy, if a little different. Naveen, an apartment mate of Mark's, who cooks amazingly good-smelling concoctions. A whole assortment of other Americans who are studying abroad. Steve and Barry, who are in the master's program, and have a fantastic wit, the two of them together are toxic. The group headed out the first night to an international party which, despite a mediocre dj was lots of fun. The dancing in a big city is oh-so much better than my little country town...

The next day I'm afraid to say I was a bad influence and Mark ended up skipping his school. (It was only one 2 hour class...) We wandered the streets of Helsinki. There is a beautiful Lutheran Cathedral. We came upon it as a wedding party was assembling for photos in the square in front of the church. Popped through a little indor market to get some sandwiches for our late lunch. We took a ferry out into the Baltic Sea to an old island called Suomelinna. It has been a defence island, and was occupied up into last century with forces. An excellent place to hike around, and stop for a picnic.

Next day we hiked around (literally around, got a bit lost...) a national park outside of Helsinki proper. It was nice to get out of the city a bit, and I am always up for a wander. Of course after a good hike, one must have the requisite pint (or two!) in an Irish pub, and we did just that in the approved Molly's pub. Sunday morning we slept in (as any good holiday requires) before I had to catch my train to the airport. That's about it! I will post pictures now. Enjoy!
