Today has been a good day. I really didn't want to get up for rounds on
Saturday, but went anyway. Rounds were quick, and then we did some
treatments on inpatient cases, flushing of wounds and the like. We were
done by 10, then the docs invited me to their 'breakfast.' Everyday
after most of the work is done (usually about 2) they sit down for
"breakfast", I thought it was a kind of rounding, talk-about-the cases
thing. Nah, they just sit and eat rolls and jelly, cheese, salami, etc.
So, we had coffee and it was good fun. I taught them how to say
ureterolithiasis...apparently that word blows their mind. I had to
repeat it about ten times per person. And, I learned some German words,
oh, and a German joke, ask me sometime and I'll tell you.

I went into the city centre this afternoon, and explored Hannover a
bit. It was great! There were tons of people out shopping, and I just
wandered. I had a bratwurst and baguette for lunch...and a German
pretzel, too...gotta live the life while I'm here. :) You should see
the stand where I bought it. If you know Grandma Helmer's German
Christmas wooden candle spinny thing (great description, I know...but
you'll have to wait for the photo if you're now lost), picture a giant
one with tables around it... It was great atmosphere. One German even
told me, there's no way any German person could ever do the Atkins diet
because they love bread too much. In my wanderings, I found a few cool
old buildings, including the opera house and a really old church. Oh,
and a funny little flea market, filled with mostly junk. I wandered in
bookstores, I'm attracted to them no matter where I am. It's alot
easier to resist buying the books, though, when you have no idea what
they say... I found the English section in one store, though. ;) I
tried to find a 'learn German' book...that doesn't exist...I know...
why would they need that sort of book? But, I thought I'd try.

I went back to work for evening rounds and treatments tonight, then
afterward we (the working students, doc on call and I) all had dinner
together. So, I'm about to call it a night, and head back to my
apartment. Oh, I forgot to mention that I met my elusive flatmate
yesterday! About two days after I got here, I heard some rustlings
about, when he moved back in, and then he would always beeline it for
the bathroom, or be gone/asleep/who knows. I was making dinner last
night, and he emerged! His name is Vitaly (I have no idea how to spell
it), and he's a vet from the ukrane, working on PhD work here,
something with PCR. He's here for about six months total, four to go.
So, I no longer have the mystery flatmate. There is another bed in my
room, but when I talked to Frau Ledwoch (the woman in charge) she said
no one else was planning to come, so I have my own room for the whole
time. I'm happy with that.

love ya...

Beth

PS. I know I keep promising York, and it'll get here sometime...
