After obtaining the necessary immigration papers in Montpellier, the Beizer family was ready to leave Europe. However leaving required taking a boat from Lisbon, which meant they would have to travel through fascist Spain and Portugal. They were cautious about doing so and hence decided to travel through Spain by train as quickly as possible, with one overnight stop in Madrid.
