In Dunkirk, the family separated. Mechel joined the French Army and Esther and the kids headed to Paris where they stayed in an apartment overnight owned by their family friends who were coincidentally the same ones they had been planning to go on the annual vacation with. Boris remembers riding part of the day-and-a-half route in a coal truck with about two dozen other refugees.
Late May/Early June 1940
In late May, Mechel went to Southern France for basic training only to discover in June that he was being lied to. He had been told that he would be transported to Algeria to join the French Foreign Legion, while in fact his platoon was going to be taken to Germany for slave labor. The next day Mechel, along with all the other soldiers in his camp, deserted.
