We arrived in Salzburg around noon on April 1st. The weather that day was not so good for walking around, very cold and rainy, but we still spent the afternoon walking all over the old part of the city. We walked by Mozart's childhood house, a couple churches, some statues and of course bought some Mozart balls! They're these chocolate balls filled with some sort of chocolate and marzipan, quite delicious actually. We were pretty cold around 6 so we stopped at a bar my guide book recommended called Sporer. They had all these home made fruit liquors and schnapps. We ordered hot punch which was just a shot of their orange liquor with hot water. It was sooooo good. If we could've we would've stayed longer but sadly they closed at 7. After that we grabbed some cheap dinner (Kebabs, the cheapest food basically everywhere here) and headed back to the hostel. At the hostel a group of girls wanted to watch The Sound of Music and obviously I had no problem with it and I got Carlos to agree to watch it because we were in Salzburg and the next day we did the tour!
The next morning we awoke to sunshine! We could see all the mountains around the town, it was really pretty. We decided to do The Sound of Music Tour but it didn't start until one so we had time to do some things in the morning. First we went to the catacombs and paid to go in but there wasn't a lot to see there except a nice view of the cometary. Next we headed up to the fortress that overlooks the whole town. We decided to save money by hiking up but to our surprise you still had to pay quite a bit to even go in after you hiked up the hill. I read in the travel guide that there is not much to see there besides the view so we decided to hike up a hill to the right of the fortress. We ended up getting great views of the city from there as well as great views of the fortress and we saved a bunch of money! It was really pretty on top of this hill because we could see all the surrounding mountains and all of Salzburg. After this walk we headed back to the hostel to take the tour!
Obviously this tour was filled with all Americans who love The Sound of Music but it was still fun. The tour guide was extremely cheesy with a splash of creepy. He made some terrible impressions from the movie as well as some weird comments. But I guess it was entertaining overall. We got to see where a bunch of things were filmed as well as go out of town a ways and see some beautiful lake towns. The tour ended with taking us to the town where the wedding scene was filmed and letting us walk around a little there. We took lots of pictures and ate some Apfelstreudel then headed back to town. Once we got back we had time to grab some dinner before our train so we headed to the brewery. This brewery was a little different. You pay for your beer, grab a mug, wash it out, then take it to the bartender who fills it up. And for food there they just have different food stands set up all over. It was really good though. I got a fish sandwich and then these salted radish things that were pretty good. After all this we grabbed our stuff from the hostel then got on the train to Vienna!
