Woke fairly early and squeezed everything into the travel case having showered beforehand. Early breakfast and taxi was there to collect us at 8:30. It was minus 21 leaving this morning brrrrrrrrrrrh, brrrrrrrrrrrh and brrrrrrrrrrrh! It was a hell for leather drive - the taxi driver was not messing and we completed the journey of 12km to Vilnius aiirport in 10 mins. Pheweee! It was a white knuckle ride for me. On arrival slight problem with the tickets but Bob sorted them out. I had a shock when I discovered my suitcase weighed in at 19.7 kg and you know it is 20kg max - that is close. Very!. Didn’t get away in security  though - had to take the boots off and the body search, Bob too. Now on to airBaltic to Riga and then changed there for the Moscow Flight. Flights fairly short 1hour 10 mins and 1hr 35min. Dimitri met us at the airport and we had a brisk ride to the city. We are 20mins walk from the Kremlin and close to the Trans Mongolian railway station so we are well placed. It was minus 16 only and our first grey day. We are now 3 hours ahead of you! It looked like it would snow and we had a few flakes flutter on windscreen. Resting up before venturing for our first foray into Moscow. Caused great hilarity in small restaurant as we couldn't understand Russian and the girls couldn't understand English but with much gesticulation, writing on paper and laughing  we succeeded in getting some hot food.  Woke today Monday to find the snow had fallen a little overnight.  Wrapped up well and set off for Red Square. The pavements are very slippy but Bob keeps me  from sliding. Only minus 14 degrees so it doesn't feel as cold as it has been. Walked round the square and then went into the most beautiful mall called GUM.  We were amazed at how expensive it all is in Moscow.  Walked over the very slippery square down to St Basil's Cathedral and had an interesting walk around. It is a labyrinth of 9 little churches linked by either corridors or stairs. Most odd as we had expected a main altar. Manyf icons but  quite garish when you see it close up.  We then went to another underground mall and Georgina I found an "iceah creamah" stall and it had pistachio so....... Bob just had to buy me one.  Yummee! I think they've stopped doing pistachio at home coz I've never seen them for ages..Returned on metro and had a lovely welcome cuppa tea. Going a-supermarket shopping forr the next 6 days.  It's here...................... Trans-Mongolian here we come!`

Alice I promise a balaclava shot tomorrow. You've seen Bob in his bobble hat so now you'll see why we caused a stir at the bus station! Auntie Babs my doggie will have such a liking for the wonderful cuisine that you are supplying her with that she'll turn her nose up when I offer her her normal biccies and chicken. I need the recipes for these delicious delectables you are feeding her. I'm on "ones hols"so I suppose she can be on her hols too.Georgina sadly no room for souvenirs - 300gms only. There may be a little extra when we eat the goodies I've packed for the 6 day train journey and jettisoned the balaclava!!!!!
