Back in Christchurch and the Hotel we stayed in 2 years ago.  Winnie the daschund is still here.(Piccie for you Sandra) Caught local buses and went to the seaside, first to Sumner then to Lyttleton both very unspoiled. First settlers arrived at Lyttleton in 1840 and both Scott and Shackleton left for the Antarctic from here. Scott left on the Terra Nova 100 years ago this November. Lyttleton has been in the news in the past few weeks because a pod of whales (60 + in number) had become stranded and sadly despite the calling of the matriachs and great effort by the locals 15 whales died. Bob found Lyttleton's museum charmingly old fashioned and very interesting especially the Scott and Shackleton exhibits as they are two of his heroes.  Piccies below plot our day. Are you with us Norman and Claire? Some good memories of Christchurch for you?

Christchurch seems so calm.....and homely, after all the exotic sights in your previous blogs......and I'm sure you're both ready for a bit of calm after such a hectic schedule.

Yes! It's like putting on a comfy pair of slippers on - homely. Actually wish I could; last 2 days limping quite badly had to buy an elastic tube bandage. Think culmination of long haul and missing my boots! How are the girls?

Thank you for the Agapanthus. On an icy, snowy day, while battling with new fencing in the garden, it was a welcome sight!! Guy sends his regards and we obviously wnt to the Museum. Did you know that Guy had signed up for the British Antarctic Survey when he met me? Not sure if he still regrets it!
Enjoy the peace of New Zealand. It's such a contrast to all the adventures you've had. Safe travelling.

I can't believe that you arenow both in New Zealand. I'm having a job keeping up with your travels, I am extremely envious though. I'd love to do the same but can't see Irene roughing it!!!!

I am really enjoying your updates and photographs and I'm sure your friends must be as well.

There is a really strong Scottish connection in New Zealand, a lot of which stems from the Highland clearances. Keep up the bloggs and photographs. Is there really that many Scottie dogs in the world or is it just that you are looking for them ? The mum of Amy Fenwick who I work with in Safer York Partnership office lives in Hong Kong . I've been having a chat to Amy about your photographs showing the buildings lit up and the talking about the music etc. Big mistake, she immediately spent the next forty minutes giving me a geography lesson on it all. Can't wait for the next installments.

Best wishes and enjoy

Jim

We are still in midwinter here so envy you the sunshine of Oz & NZ. New members dinner at Ganton yesterday evening, very enjoyable but spoiled by a dreadful drive home in heavy snow afterwards. Had to abandon our taxi and were lucky to finish our journey in a passing friends 4x4.!!
Full of admiration of your adventurous tour and do enjoy the descriptions and pictures. Love to you both, take care.
