The picture of a black sandy beach and sparkling blue waters against a backdrop of mountains was so inviting that I just wanted to jump into the picture and jump I did, for I boarded a plane bound for the Spanish island of Tenerife.  I made a point of travelling all over the island, visiting every corner although I based myself in Playa de las Americas in the south of the island for one week and stayed in the north for the second week.  The black sandy beach was Playa de la Arena and it was just as beautiful in real life as it was in the photo but on that scorching hot day, I didn't realise just how hot the sand was. - of course black absorbs the heat.  Standing on the concrete I kicked of my shoes and jumped onto the sand - my intention of strolling down to the sea diminished the minute my feet touched the unbearably hot sand, I let out a little yelp and couldn't get into my shoes quick enough! I'll never walk on hot coals.

At another beach in the north of the island I pushed my hand into the black sand and because I had just applied sun-tan lotion, my hand was sticky so the little grains of sand stuck to my hand to make this picture.
