I was going to travel along with Jan, a uni friend of my mother's who often works in New York. And Jan's two children: Marie (17 at the time) and Antoine (15 at the time). I was 19.
Although I had gone to Russia the same year, NY had this extra appeal. I had been planning the trip for 3 months, wanting to make sure I didn't miss a thing =)
Travelling to New York was already an adventure on it's own. We left early in the morning to get our train, the Thalys, in the Brussels-South station heading to Paris (I think Charles de Gaule). It was the first time I took the high-speed train, and I must say, it's quite comfortable.
Once at the airport, we checked in and waiting to be boarded. I was lucky again for the airplane: Jan had tickets for first class and I got to sit at the window. First class is remarkably comfortable too =)
So after, I think, about 8 hours, we arrived at JFK. From there we took a yellow cab to our hotel.
We dropped our bags and went to the subway, bought ourselves a week-pass and travelled to Central Park. The weather was lovely and so we just relaxed on the grass for a while.
After a while, we heard a loud crash. Behind the 'hill' we were seated, there was a street, and some kind of old bus, drove on the hill, and hit a land post... So there we were, just of few hours of NY and already we had 'witnessed' something quite impressing. Oh, and I saw my first NYPD car: a jeep.
