Today was another day to explore Madrid.  Mom stayed at the hotel as it was going to involve a lot of walking since the Metro is in its first day of strike with only about 50% of trains working.  I exited the metro at the Plaza de Independencia and hoped on the Tourist Bus for the circuit to the New Town of Madrid.  Not much to see really in my opinion but it was an okay drive and the weather was great (even on the hot side).

After completing the tour (about one hour), I got off at the same point where I boarded and entered the Retiro Park.  It is huge but really beautiful and worth the sweat I left there (it was really hot by now).  I first arrived at the small man-made lake where many people were in row boats navigating or simply enjoying the sun. In the background was the monument to king Alfonso XII.  It is really neat and very ornate with four lions guarding the steps up from the lake.  Pretty cool.  I continued meandering thru the many aisles and passageways of the park stopping here and there to take some photos of fountains, small decorative parks or just plain and simple nice landscapes.

I walked passed the Museo del Prado trying to decide if I was going to enter but decided against it since I had already been there years ago and don't do too well in museums.  I continued my pedestrian exploration of the city up the Gran Via and to the Chueca neighborhood getting lost along the way which led to a beautiful pink building.

My next stop was at the Campo de los Naciones, a very large park on the edge of town.  It was filled with kids, families, people enjoying the outdoors and the beautiful weather.  Some were playing ball, flying kites, biking, sunbathing (yes even at 8-9pm), having a picnic.  Just great fun. The park has many sculptures, water areas (canals, ponds).

I arrived back at the hotel tired but had a good discovery day.
