Today we went to the Somali Cultural Center in Hargeisa, Somaliland. Lots of effort to preserve history and display it to the international and national community are currently being made. Somaliland lacks international recognition which makes such efforts rather difficult, however Ahmed, pictured, working in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and envisions just that. We went to the center to photograph some of the pieces for future projects. It was amazing. Many of these items I've seen or used and many of them I had not. The pillow shocked me because I'd just seen it behind glass at the Cairo Museum a month ago! When I told the Minister and he was surprised. There is SO much history here and must be reclaimed and preserved. This issue is a product of war. The devestation cannot be described but when a country is at war, or has been, sooooo much is lost. Many photographs of my father were destroyed along with our family home in 1988 leaving me to piece together images to even see what he looked like. But of course this issue is much deeper than that. We're talking about history here! Museums destroyed and looted yet the cave paintings remain as well as other historical sites. But they must be reclaimed. I hope to help in this process in any way that I can.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
