I traveled up to my home town Wonder Lake, IL to visit some family and while I was home I got a chance to attend Summerfest up in Milwaukee, WI. I went to see the band Modest Mouse which I was actually really excited to see. Id never seen them in concert and i really enjoy their music. I like this band for their lyrics and sound. They have some really great songs that are heavier rock while others are on the softer indie sounding side.
The band played "Float On" for their second song which is a more recognizable Modest Mouse song since it got radio time, but it was a good one to start out with. Its a very happy song which basically just says everything will work out. The bad comes with good, life goes on and so will you. My favorite line is "Even if things get heavy, we'll all float on". It's a great song.
The very next song they played was "Bury me with it". I love this song because the singer really gets into the chorus when he screams "Please! Bury me with it!" I think this song is about forgetting the insignificant things in life that people get hung up on like money, fads, ect.. It says that if all these insignificant things take over than you should just bury me with it. This song refers to people as hummingbirds who lost the plot and will not move. We are people who live day after day but are working blindly, we are people who lost the meaning of life somewhere and do not grow as a result.
Another song they played was called "Education". This song to me is about how people are just monkies in suits and ties. No matter how much education, or as Modest Mouse puts it "something in between", it's really all a mask. People make bad decisions, war still occurs, the earth is tore up and more. People aren't really educated because they don't care and as a result bad decisions repeat themselves just like bad history.
They also played a song called "Gravity Rides Everything". This has always been one of my favorite Modest Mouse songs. It is perfect while driving in a car. This one is similar to Float On ironically. They have similar themes about the cycle of life. This song focuses on letting go of your worries because everything will fall into place eventually. Gravity is a metaphor for the inevitability of life.
The last song I'm going to talk about is called "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes". This was the last song they played before the encore and definitely the most energizing which was a good way to end the main set. This song I think is about the bad men who have turned the cities to ashes. They are facing up to what they have done and the main chorus is from the perspective of these men who say "does anybody know a way a body could get away".
This was a great concert although I wish it was longer. There are many other songs that they played that are just as good, but these are some of the songs that I really enjoyed.
