today i'm going on a trip to some other beach with bigger, better waves. that means i've graduated to hanging out with the cool kids, those that can actually surf. being told that was a super nice ego trip - i guess i'll never grow up and stop yearning for others to tell me that i'm good at something. sigh.
tamarindo itself is ok. it is expensive and has a burger king, pizza hut and subway. ugh. i guess there are much better places to go in costa rica. next time.
one other costa rica story i can't resist telling. so i was lounging at some low tables on the beach taking a break from the waves, drinking a margarita and eating some delicious nachos. i was in the shade of a big, deep green, tropical tree. as i took a sip of my maggie - PLOP - a big, green tree frog landed on my table next to my nachos. i stared in somewhat stunned silence. the frog stared back. like Frog and Toad, we were friends. i made some motions toward him and he stayed put. i slowly worked up the nerve to poke him. he still didn't move. brave frog, i thought. or maybe hungry. i offered him, in the following order, a bean, a piece of lettuce and a piece of chicken. he politely declined all of the above. i guess he wanted some bugs. couldn't help him out there. anyway, i thought he was real cool so i went to get some of my surfing buddies to show them the frog. as we walked back to the table i gestured to the tree from where he came - and almost choked! wrapped around the branches right above my seat and dangling down perhaps a foot above where my head had been was a long green SNAKE! yikes! his gaze was locked on the frog. ahh-hah! and here i thought the frog was just diggin' the view from the table, but he was actually avoiding turning lunch for sydney the tree snake. hilarious and interesting. we took a bunch of pics of both snake and frog and they eventually moved on to continue their dance of prey and predator elsewhere on the beach. i was really thrilled at the opportunity to see the snake and relieved that i didn't stand straight up and get a taste of his poison (if he had any). super cool!
