Where I stayed
Green Canyon Motel
Miles: 300
Weather: HOT
What a day! Started out well. Said good bye to Julia and got on the road at 0900. Trip up I-5 thru Seattle was good. By the time we turned off for Sumas WA. and the border it was getting very hot.
The border crossing went well except I didn't have our travel documents ready. Alex had to push me through the checkpoint because it was so hot I didn't want the bike to idle for long.
We traveled along BC 1 to Hope then on towards Cache Creek. At least that was the plan. We were about 60 mi. from Cache Creek when we spotted smoke. As we appraoched up a steep incline we saw a very large motorhome, towing an SUV, completly engulfed in flames. It was as sad as it was spectacular. Fuel tanks were exploding , ammunition was cooking off AND the forest was burning.
Then burning forest became an issue. Soon there was a fire spotter flying circules around us followed by a tanker. The spotter came in very low, steep with it's siren blarring. Then came the tanker dumping retarden on the fire - wow.
This was all cool to see but Alex and I were on the verge of becoming heat causualities. We had been standing on the hot road for two hours - we turned around and headed back down the mountain stopping at the first motel we came to; the Green Canyon Motel. It was cheap and it had air and that's about it.
Bottomline we were smoked, and 60 miles short. We would have to make up the lost miles tomorrow.
