Hey Hey and a Big G'Day toya,

How do you celebrate your fifth birthday in China?
Eating chicken with a beautiful girl of course!
Say hello to Chen Miao...HELLO CHEN MIAO
She says; Hello World!

Actually I forgot it was my birthday (I usually do) as it seems no one really bothers with them much here in this town or school. In my past schools they have always been a huge deal and come complete with a huge festive dinner along with a huge hangover for morning classes.  It wasn’t until I was chatting to Chen  Miao that the conversation turned to birthdays and it then clicked that it was actually my birthday the following day (Monday, 12th October) so we decided to met at what is known as DICO’s and you guessed it, most westerners call it DISCOS by mistake. 

I actually like it much better than KFC.
You can get rice meals and seaweed and egg soup.
I also introduced Chen Miao to the sundae....and blueberry.
You can also get the normal things like burgers etc....what more do you need!

After dinner we were much too full to even open the huge cake she brought so we headed back to my place where we spent a few hours looking through some of my thousands of photos from my travels all over Asia and then bused it back to the Teachers College at the far end of town where she lives.  Being so full we then decided on a walk and ended up walking along the river all the way back to my apartment again. 

Today I took the cake into the moldy and smelly English Teachers office where after doing our best to devour it we found we could only get through under half so I headed out in to the play ground and found some of my favourite Grade 4, 5 & 6 students which of course included my most favourite student Lunar (dressed in the yellow top with the button at the front) who believes she has a many thousand year old festival all in her name.  We celebrated the Mid Autumn Festival last week and it is all about the Moon as it is at its brightest for the entire year and the Chinese have been making and eating moon cakes for a long time to celebrate

She is the funniest thing ever!

As you can see in the photos I received my parents birthday package right on time this year so a big thanks must go to both Aussie & China Postal Services because they have never let me down once in the almost five years I’ve been here.  I’ve only just run out of vegemite last week and as of last week have had to had my morning eggs and bread vegemitless.  I am also almost out of hay fever tablets so everything seems to have arrived right on time as I’ve been sneezing myself silly for the past week.  The weather has turned very cold and while my friends in the south are still in shorts and a t-shirt we up here in the north are all wearing thermals and my hands and feet get cold sitting at my computer typing.   People are now using their fires to keep them warm so that means the city is covered by a layer of smoke all day every day.

I even got my big fluffy slippers out last night that I got last winter.
They are the only things that stop the cold from the floor tiles numbing my feet.
I got my Wizbang laptop back on the weekend and now each night I wait for it to die again.

I’ll be heading to Xian this weekend to catch up with my buddy Angel and some other friends for a birthday beer or ten so I might even have something else exciting to blog about.  If not, then it’s coming to that time of the year when exciting happenings become far and few between due to the cold weather and spending most of my time indoors.  During winter there isn’t enough snow to make things exciting, beautiful and blogable yet it continues to snow and the entire city turns into a huge mud pit. 

Thankfully though we will still have some weather like today…sunny with a big blue sky!
I am yet to finish my two weeks of Northern Foods blogs.

They have been far more difficult to eat my way through as unlike southern food northern food really isn’t that exciting especially living in such a small mountain city where every second eatery is a noodles or dumplings eatery.  I could cheat and go to different eateries in Xian but that’s not what they are about, they are simply what I eat from day to day each week. 

Anyhow, that’s enough for this blog!
