Well, after our nightmare journey to Phuket, we started to relax and realised that we actually both love it here! It is a really nice area and there is so much to do. Also the people are really friendly and the Guesthouse is the best we have stayed in so far.
When we woke up on Sunday morning we were miffed to discover that it was raining which meant no beach - bummer! But by lunchtime the rain had stopped and the weather had cleared up a lot, so we went for a walk down to the beach and around a bit of the town. The beach is really clean and the water is pretty clear and refreshing (paddling only at this point) so we were hoping for sun on Monday! We got a pretty good idea of our whereabouts and so headed back to the hostel as the sky clouded over again. There we met the hostel owners, Mark, an Austrian guy, and Annie, a Thai girl. We clicked with them straight away and spent a fair bit of time chatting to them about life in Phuket. It turns out they own a bar in town called Magic Bar too, so that was put on the list for that night! We had dinner at the hostel cafe and then agreed to meet at the bar later on. When we arrived it was cool to see that there were lots of games on the bar to play while you were drinking. Things like Jenga and puzzles where you have to figure out how to separate 2 pieces of metal from one another - Dave C would have been right at home! We played a fair few of the games throughout the night and had a lot of fun chatting to Mark and Annie too. It is a really good bar and was the busiest in the area! Before we knew it, the bar was getting ready to close and it was time to head back, get some sleep and hope for sun!
We woke on Monday to find that the sun was indeed out, so we headed straight to the beach where we spent most of the day either on sun loungers or in the sea. It is sooo hot but the sea is really refreshing so packed with people. We got chatting to a fair few people, and met Mitch from South Africa. He seems really nice so hopefully we'll see him again before we leave. On Monday night there was a pool competition in the hostel bar and they were a player short so Ed took the spare place. It was a good night with lots of drunk pool playing, mainly by the opposite team who lost and ended up buying everyone beer! The game didn't finish til mega late so there was no trip to the bar tonight.
On Tuesday we were up very early to go on a trip to Phi Phi and Khai Islands. We got picked up by a minibus and taken to the harbour at the other side of the island and then we went on a speedboat, my fist ever time on a speedboat and amazingly I didn't get sick! We stopped first at Phi Phi Island which is a lovely beach with really clear sand, but was packed with people as all the tour groups take the same route and stop the same islands at the same time. This made it feel a bit commercial but it was still a nice place to visit. Next stop was Viking Cove where there are some caves that the Vikings used which still have some of the Viking stuff there. We weren't allowed to get off here but we could take photos. Same with Monkey Island. Here there are loads of monkeys living wild and the boats stop to feed them bananas and let the tourists get a good look at them. They are really cute but I kind of feel we should leave them alone and not bombard them with hundreds of visitors all at once. Anyway, next stop was Maya Island where we stopped for a buffet lunch before heading on to the last stop of the day, Khai Island. Here we did some snorkeling and saw some really colourful fish, we did a bit of sunbathing and a bit of swimming in the sea. Then it was back to Phuket where we got dropped off at our hostel again. Tonight we ate in a Danish restaurant and had pancakes with ice cream for dessert - I have decided I could live on this alone!
Today we have had a sort out day really as we are both sunburnt (typical Brits) and we needed to get ready to head to Bangkok. Mark and another girl from the hostel gave us a lift to the bus stop on the back of their mopeds! That was cool fun and I actually enjoyed the ride! We made sure we both wore helmets though and didn't look around us as we drove! Don't watch where you're going and it will all be good - that's the key when driving over here!
We are really sad to be leaving Phuket as we have loved it here and have enjoyed spending time with Mark and Annie, and also Mitch who we met for a drink today before we left. This is definitely on our list of places to come back to!
