In Aswan on June 21st we celebrated Amy's birthday! We started the day early by traveling to the infamous temple of Abu Simbel. It's really an amazing place that was even better than we imagined. The place is just mind blowing for its scale and detailed carvings. The outside has four massive statues of Ramses II, but it's also elaborately decorated on the inside. Even more amazing is that the current location is actually the result of an international project that MOVED the temple piece by piece from a lower spot when the original temple was to be flooded by the construction of a dam. We've seen a lot of temples and ruins, but this was definitely one of the highlights of Egypt. In the afternoon we went sailing on the Nile and going for a swim in the river. For dinner we went to a Nubian village for a traditional meal (plus some cake of course!). That night we slept under the stars on the sailboat on the bank of the Nile river.

The next morning we woke early to catch the sunrise and depart for Luxor. There we visited more temples, ruins, and tombs, including the Valley of the Kings where the pharoahs, such as Tutankamun, used to be buried. As amazing as the tombs were, our highlight here was not the valley itself but how we got there - we woke up before sunrise to take a water taxi across the Nile and then rode donkeys 7km to the Valley of the Kings. At first we were a little uneasy riding them, but once we got used to it, we couldn't stop laughing...donkeys are awesome to ride! Egypt may be known for its camels, but donkeys are definitely where it's at!

Wow guys!
Hey,

Been great fun followin your travels- and I love the cheesy pyramid pics! Was a bit worried that you hadn't updated it after your trip to the Middle East...glad you managed to keep out of trouble. Keep safe and take care, love Emmie xxx

Re: Wow guys!
Emmie!

Thanks for your concern but we made it through with no problems at all. Not sure I'd want to do the same trip now though, with all the craziness in the mid-east!

How's the job hunt going? Or are you just enjoying your summer?

Take care!
Ed & Amy
