The main attraction of Foz do Iguacú is the UNESCO protected Iguaçu National Park which sits on the border of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. The Iguacu river runs through the park and creates breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls. Unfortunately, this winter has been the driest for many years, so except for the larger waterfalls, most have dried out.
Legend says.....
The water of Iguacú was running very calm without rapids or waterfalls. At the time, living by the river were the Guarani Indians. The Guarani Indians loved Tupá, the god of water of the Iguacú river. For Tupá, the most beautiful virgin girls in the tribe were sacrificed.
On the day that Naipi would be sacraficied, Tarobá, her lover warrior kidnapped her and tried to escape going down the river in a canoe. Furious M´Boi penetrated the river bed creating a huge crater that was to become a waterfall. Naipi was then transformed into a rock, convict to being hit by the waters of the Devils Throat waterfall. Tarobá was then transformed into a palm tree to contemplate his beloved for the whole of eternity.
Such a tragic love story....
