In order to keep our little surprise hidden we had to have a cover story so we told our family and friends that we were in Mexico studying Spanish.  In order to keep up the cover we Googled things to do in Mexico and every time we spoke to them on MSN Messenger we made up things we were doing in "Mexico".  We even sent a postcard from Mexico City while we waited for our connecting flight to Los Angeles.

Eventually the day arrived when our parents would be getting together for dinner at the Mulgrave Country Club so we planed to just show up at their table and surprise them.  Arriving at the restaurant we told the story to the lady at the reception desk.  She quickly checked the reservations list and told us they hadn't arrived yet.  She very kindly rang Rick's parent's phone number to see if they were on their way there but there was no answer.  There was definitely nobody sitting at their allocated table so we headed over to the pokies area to wait and watch the front door for their arrival.  After about half an hour with no sign of them we decided they were not going to show and figured we'd have a quick look around the restaurant to make sure they hadn't changed tables.  Megan spotted them first way down the back, hidden from our view.  We quickly headed right down to the back towards their table.  Rick's Mum spotted us first but she was so surprised (expectedly) that she was rendered speechless and couldn't tell anyone else at the table.  Eventually they turned around to see what she was pointing at and then turned back too shocked to believe what they saw (were we ghosts?).  When we reached the table, after what felt like ages but was really only a few seconds, they all jumped up not saying much.  They were completely speechless.  After a few minutes they finally realised we were actually there and started screaming like crazy, hugging us.  They could not believe we had traveled so far and were really in their presence.  Obviously our lies had worked as they had no idea at all that we were in the country.  They were even more surprised when we told them that we had been speaking to them on MSN from our friend's house in Ringwood just down the road.  After they got over the shock we had a chance to catch up properly with champagne all round.  This was when we asked Rick's parents if we could stay with them for a few weeks...
