With our mountain bike ride put on hold we decided to do a day tour out to see the ruins of Tiwanaku (also called Tiahuanaco). These are the best Inca ruins in Bolivia, but we'd heard they are nothing compared to those found in Peru. After the hours drive out from La Paz we arrived at the site which is currently undergoing excavation with people everywhere, digging, sifting and moving stones around. Some of the temples have been restored, but the best relic is the Gate of the Sun which we were told was an ancient calendar based on the sun.

We'd also organized to head south to Uyuni for a four day four-wheel drive tour of the salt flats and surrounding terrain. The overnight bus down to Uyuni was pretty interesting. Entering the bus we were greeted by funky pink disco lighting and a lady on the front row with her pet dog. The pet dog was fine (cute dog actually) but sometime during the night another lady got on and man did she smell! She smelt badly of wet dog! During the night the bus stopped every 15 minutes, dropping people off, getting petrol, the driver getting dinner, visiting a local church, picking up and dropping off locals - you name it we did it. Luckily we managed to get some sleep because from this point the road to Uyuni isn't the best. The final five hours was like being on a massive vibrating machine with, at one point, our bodies being literally catapulted off the seat. The bus was shaking so bad the built in TV almost came off its bracket (thankfully we didn't have the seats right beneath it)!
