Finally we made it to the Vatican early to avoid the queues. We found ourselves still lined up around the corner but as soon as the doors opened everyone made it through pretty quickly. We headed straight for the Sistine Chapel for a look at the fresco ceiling and stared up in awe with the millions of other people. The depth of Michaelangelo's paintings was great. Then we meandered through the rest of the museum slowly taking it all in. It was amazing to see the wealth of the Vatican, displayed in the thousands of paintings and other artwork. Whilst walking we discussed this, agreeing that if the Pope decided to sell of even a small amount of the collection he could make a real difference to the lives of millions of people in third world countries. We think the church is very hypocritical and should put its money where its mouth is and use some of its amassed wealth to help the poor. After wandering around for ages and still not seeing half of it we headed out to find a restaurant for lunch. Down the road we found a place and tucked into the best meal in Italy so far. It was just what we were after.

In the afternoon, with the sun setting, we headed over to the famous Colosseum to try and get a good sunset shot. Unfortunately it is so massive we don't know how anyone fits it all into one photo (we don't have a wide angle lens or any professional camera stuff, just a standard digital camera). After taking a few photos we headed over to the Circus Massimo which was a historic race track but these days is a dodgy area where people seem to take their feral dogs for a bit of a run around. As we headed back to the hostel we walked back passed the Colosseum where we saw no less than three brides having wedding photos taken in front of the lit up ruins. Not too sure how appropriate the place is considering the number of animals and people killed there in the name of entertainment.
