Our night in Oslo was interesting. The other roommates had been out for the night arriving back fairly quietly at about midnight. A few hours later the room was awoken by one of the guys, we think he was drunk, snoring his heart out. He actually snored so loudly and forcefully he gave himself the hiccups. You would think this would wake him up but no, instead everyone else in the room sat there staring at him not sure if he was ok or if he was actually choking to death. Still none of us ventured out of our bed to check and eventually he stopped and went on sleeping. When we did finally get up we noticed a new guy was there in one of the beds. He didn't have any bags and had just crashed on a spare bed. No one had any idea when he came in or where he came from.

Looking through the Oslo guide we found the free section on what to do around town. One of the things was the Munch Art Gallery. The gallery was really good, showing Munch's work, we also timed it well to see the English video of his life story. Watching this first was good background information before we walked through the gallery. Initially his artwork looked simple, like any first grader could paint it, but on closer inspection it was very complex, with vivid facial expressions and depth. The security at the gallery was beefed up recently, because someone, embarrassingly, stole Munch's famous picture The Scream. Check it out at the BBC web site.

After the gallery we packed up our stuff and walked down to the dock boarding the Pearl of Scandinavia. Our route to the dock was interesting as we passed through the prostitute strip in town with all the hookers on the street corners. They were in skimpy outfits and short skirts, no mean feat as it was bellow zero, so you really have to give them credit for their dedication to their profession. On one corner there were a heap of dodgy guys loitering around and just when we were quickening our pace to get out of this seedy part of town, a police car drove past and they all bolted away. We have never seen people move with such purpose. Like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

Our transport to Copenhagen was very up market. We paid just slightly more for our berth on the ferry than it cost for accommodation in Oslo and it was much nicer with bunk beds and an ensuite bathroom in the cabin. We wandered around the ship checking out the restaurants and facilities and having a Danish beer (8% alcohol volume we were told) before heading back to the room to watch a DVD on the laptop and enjoy, weirdly enough, a chocolate milk in a can (alcohol free).
