Where I stayed
AI Express Hostel
Arriving in Tallinn around 10pm we asked how far the bus station was from the centre of town. Only a quick walk we were advised. About 30 minutes later we ended up walking into the Radisson hotel's reception, begging for help. Where were we? Luckily only 15 minutes away from the Al Express hostel. After a good nights sleep it was off to explore a new country.
Tallinn is a really nice town, with the old city walls and cobble stone streets. It's really relaxing here and we don't feel on edge like we did in Russia, expecting the police to hassle us for our papers at every turn. We wandered around town through the Town Hall Square. Walking up to Toompea Hill we had a great view of the city and the old Toompea Castle, now the Riigikogu, the Estonian parliament. It's amazing that some of the buildings were built in the 12th century. Deciding just to wander around this quiet town (though we hear in summer it's invaded by Finnish tourists) we walked past markets selling only knitted goods (never can have enough knitted wool and wool related products in these parts) and ended up at a book shop. Sitting in the shop's cafe, the music was almost as bad as the stuff we'd had to listen to on the bus in Laos, except this time there was yodeling mixed in.
Having dinner at the cool Kompressor restaurant we eye'd off the Foster's on tap. Considering it was Australia Day we almost succumbed and had a pint, but who in the world drinks this stuff? We toasted the day with a pint of A.Le Coq and a glass of Fizz Cider.
For those that have asked, the tip of Rick's frozen nose is in good health and finally recovering from the freezing treatment it got in Russia.
