So we arrived in Rockhampton at midnight, went into the hostel, saw photos of Steve-o and Chris Pontius on the wall from when they stayed at the same hostel (claim to fame or what!?!?!?!) and fell, quite quickly, asleep.

Woke up bright and early (?) in the morning and headed into town. Really not sure what to expect. All we've heard about Rockhampton is: "Why the hell are you going there?" To which our reply has always been "We hear they do good steak". It is, after all, the beef capital of Australia. So there you go. You need ask no more.

We found town - it's actually a really nice place - and tourist information and what time we can get a bus to the free zoo and botanical gardens. Off we went.

Best zoo ever!

For starters it's free. Australia Zoo...$50 or something stupid. Rockhampton Zoo...$0.

So we wandered round, saw a chicken that looked as though it were wearing a bear costume. Cool. A horny baboon that quite literally raped it's baboon friend. No kidding. It just ran over, did his business and left. Don't see that every day, I guess that's a good thing, but you know what i mean.

Then to the chimps which went mental, started shaking the cages, making LOADS of noise and then started spitting at people. Completely unprovoked yet the (hot) zoo worker girl came over to everyone and demanded we all stop teasing them. If teasing them involves saying "what the hell are they doing? they're mental" and getting spat on, then i guess we were teasing. Anyhoo...

Went to see a couple of koalas do nothing, then some crocs do the same, and some dingoes doing, again, nothing. Another Cassowary (didn't beat the wild one), some kangaroo/wallaby things, emus galore. What else? Can't remember.

Anyway, so we wandered round the botanical garden. Not as good as the zoo, but we just had to pass time til they fed the koalas. Went back for that. They were pretty cool when they were awake. But the zoo keeper dude made the mistake of bringing his wombat along. THE COOLEST THING IN THE WORLD!

After the koala feeding/talk we went round the corner and he did a wombat talk whilst the wombat pottered around, just being cool. Kept running off and digging holes and stuff!

We were allowed to play with it (not like that) and stuff, then Owen asked a typically Owenlike question and we felt it necessary to leave. Not really the reason we left, we needed to get the bus but...

Got back to the hostel and got ready for steak. Which involved doing nothing except trying not to start drinking too soon.

Held out, went to the restaurant downstairs at the hostel, had a few beers, some cracking steak, and a bottle of red. All in all a good evening, and very civilised darling!

And then we left on the midnight bus.

I love Rockhampton
