Chichen Itza was first on the ruins "hit list" and it brought back memories of Ankor Wat in Cambodia. Its a huge site and not fully excavated, the big pyramid temple was built in 5 AD. All of the temples were designed around the Mayan calender to make use of the equinox and solstice to decide when to plant and harvest. Like the Inka´s the nobels had thier heads shaped at birth and ruled the "common" people. But, if the priests needed to make human sacrifices to please the gods, they chose from the nobles....thats a first for the common mortal man!!
Merida is a quaint town, nice square, church etc...people are really friendly when they find out your English....cant say that about many places. They are really into dancing, salsa is their speciality and at weekends they are all out in their best gear dancing in the square to live bands. Bri being hindered by his 2 left feet, has perfected his " Bri" dance, for those of you who have seen him dance, you know what I mean hehehhe.
We spent  Sunday at a couple of the cenote´s, big under ground caverns of fresh water. You get there on a horse drawn "train" or wooden cart on railway tracks. Its a bumpy ride, in heat and dust, so the swim in the cenotes is fab.

Ah the culture, Mac was back in his element.  The site was big and full of big grey stoney, pariamidy looking buildings, at least they were easy to sketch and paint..... lucky Mac has loads of Paynes grey!  Looking at the sites it made Mac wonder how we only managed to build Stone Henge, a pile of rocks in comparrison.  Mexico is very hot, the people are friendly and the cocktails quite cheap.  Swimming in natural pools in undergound caves with fish in, bumpy rides on pony drawn trams and some truly terrible local music is making this a fab expereince.  The pics only give an impression, in real life they are massive and on most sites only a small percentage have been uncovered, a good excuse to come back in 10 years time...... Mac
