Best view of the trip so far: Today Tom and I walked up to the old Kotor fortress. We did it just after breakfast hoping that not only would we have some much needed energy, but also that we'd miss the heat of the day. Perhaps we had energy, but we certainly didn’t escape the heat (well over 30 degrees already). I’m not complaining, but the heat made the 1300+ steps seem like a lot more! The views were absolutely stunning though and we sat up there for quite some time just admiring the amazing Black Mountains which meet the clear blue sea and the cute little towns that surround it.

Biggest memory jolt from last trip: Today we went to Lady of the Rock island. I saw this last time, but like the Trevi fountain, I could visit this place a million times and never be sick of it. A truly spectacular artificial island built in the 15th century. The legend goes a little something like this. One day many years ago two fisherman were fishing off a big rock in the ocean off Perast. While they were fishing an oil painting of the Virgin Mary washed up on the rock. They took this unlikely event as an omen and decided to build a church on this rock. This took a lot of doing so several boats were sunken around the rock so as there would be some foundation to build this church upon. (Every year on July 22nd locals row over with rocks in their boats and throw them in ceremoniously to continue the task.) It took a long time, but the result is nothing short of stunning.

Best dinner of trip so far: Mum very generously offered to take us all out to dinner tonight and even told us that we were allowed to choose the restaurant. We joked that we were going to go for lobster (100 Euros a kilo here), but decided on a place from LP that sounded really nice (Stari Mlini, meaning Old Mill). What a stunning setting, oddly enough it was built around an old mill, facing the sea on one side and the glorious 'Black Mountains’ on the other. There was a crystal clear stream leading to the sea with fish swimming in its clear waters and we sat under a fig tree. A lovely night was had by all.

Random event of the day: After dinner we asked if they could call us a cab, when we got outside a man with a strong American accent called us over and told us he would drive us home. Turns out he’s Californian (married to a Montenegrin woman) and wanted his kids to learn Serbian so he decided to come and live in Montenegro for a year. He told us that he was literally the only surfer in Montenegro and that he had discovered some good places to surf here. The randomness of it all made us unsure of whether we were supposed to pay him as we were in his private car and we though maybe he was just a bit bored. Luckily when we got there he told us ‘that will be 6 Euros thanks’ (a fair price, especially as he took mum past the best pharmacy in Kotor so she could get some cough medicine).
