Where I stayed
A very lovely lady's apartment
What I did
Hung out with some awesome people!
Best part about Vrboska: Vrboska is a very beautiful and quiet seaside town that you wouldn't find if you didn't know people who were in the know. Thanks to Ella & Rocco (very lovely and hospitable Croatians who now live in Germany near Olli and Anke) who invited Olli and Anke to Vrboska (who in turn invited us). We would never have come across this gorgeous little town otherwise. We spent our days going to a few of the islands different beaches, which is quite a different experience to Australia. Of course there are pebbles instead of sand, the water is much warmer and arguably bluer, but the main difference is the sheer amount of people (half of whom are committing budgie-smuggling crimes) you have to share the place with. There is no space for personal space on a Balkans beach (not thus far anyway) and no one looks sideways at you if you plonk your towel right next to theirs, it's just how it works here. I wasn't complaining though. Blue water, hot sun and nutella crepes served fresh on the beach. What more could a girl ask for? Thanks so much to Olli and Anke and Ella and Rocco for making our time there so memorable!
Score for the last evening: A Twix ice cream. Yep, it's pretty much as you imagine. I saw one in a service station just out of Zagreb, but as I had just started driving on the right (wrong) hand side of the road, it wasn't all that warm and I figured that if I saw one I would see more, I didn't buy it. Big mistake. I drove Tom and mum quite mad searching high and low for the next few days looking for the ever elusive Twix ice cream. I spent almost half an hour in the pouring rain looking for said ice cream in Sarajevo, but to not avail (I did however come across (and buy in desperation) a poor magnum substitute, Tom had to eat the other half). You can then imagine my excitement when I came across this wondrous after dinner treat while in Hvar. For those who may be wondering, it was just as good as I thought it was going to be. Only problem is, is that now I'm hooked and am yet to come across another one :(
Poem for the day: Poem about Hvar on Hvar's tourist brochure. I have transcribed it exactly as it is written on the brochure. I do have to agree, Hvar is really special!
HVAR IS SOMETHING REALLY SPECIAL
Hvar is wonderful and remarkable in everything.
It boasts one of the most beautiful Mediterranean landscapes Nature have ever
created,
an agreeable and healthy climate,
a clean, unpolluted environment,
the strong and intoxicating fragrance of lavender, rosemary and heather,
cheerful and brisk everyday life,
age-old and glorious history,
illustrious Renaissance poets, the first public theater in Europe,
an attractive urban visage (some have likened it to a woman’s face),
a rich variety of cultural and historic monuments,
the longest tradition of organized tourism in Croatia,
witty and charming hosts and their immeasurable love for their town, and a
magical power to charm and
enslave anyone who ever steps on its soil.
How can it be explained?
Hvar is something really special, an experience you mustn’t miss!
