Before leaving Italy, we checked out a first world war cemetery at Gorizia. We knew nothing of what the Italians had done in WWI. It turns out that they tried to grab some more land from Austria and were doing very nicely until the Germans came to help the Austrians at Caporetto and by the end of the war Italy was 750,000 men worse off and back exactly to where it had started.

Mussolini had found the original war cemetery to small and insignificant so he had reburied 100,000 men on the other side of the road under a gigantic monument some 22 stories high about 1/4 mile square.
We trekked to the top and as usual with these things were affected by the sense of complete waste not only of young life but also in this case, of concrete!

The border of Italy and Slovenia runs right through Gorizia and we crossed into one of the new EU countries not knowing what to expect. We rehearsed the name of the capital which was not a wasted exercise. The border guard asked - why do you come to Slovenia? - Gill said we wanted to visit Ljubljana making a good fist of the pronunciation - just go straight down the road he said. He then asked - do you have trouble with our roads? tricky one to answer that one - we had only driven about three feet on his roads. I said no they were fine and he waved us through.

Ljubljana was small, beautiful, and old fashioned - and so were the girls with emphasis on "beautiful".
We made a note to encourage Robert and David to catch the next Ryanair flight and bring a couple of beauty queens back to Rickmansworth.
