In March of 2007 I found myself in a bit of a limbo and a sudden one at that. I had decided to change jobs after an opportunity presented itself within less than a month and found myself with lots of leave to clear, and with very little planned in terms of what to do with the leave, where to go, and with precious little time to even think of rounding up any companions.

I therefore decided that the best option at that time was to plan for a simple trip to Utah and Arizona, in particular to the national parks I had wanted to visit when I had been posted to the United States for work. There was a multitude of places around the 2 states that had captured my imagination in photos and I decided now was the time to make my journey, and so I flew halfway across the world again, rented a basic automobile at LAX airport which was to be my lone companion for the journey, and set off first towards Vegas. My mission was simple - to have a great break, and to bring back the best memories the American Southwest could afford me.

Somehow amidst the glitter and glamour and the glitzy lights, I've never taken to a fondness for Vegas. Sure the fountain at the Bellagio can keep one mesmerised for hours, as I imagined myself that night standing shoulder to shoulder with George Clooney and Brad Pitt in the tail scene from Oceans 11, but the ever present crowds on the Strip seemed just anonymous and everything else transient and to a certain extent unreal. Here, where the statue of liberty, the eiffel tower, and the arc de triumph were all in the wrong place.

One night was all I spent in a Vegas motel just off the strip. One night was enough.
